PAVING SLAB FIXING INSTRUCTIONS

Sandstone

The sandstone slabs are all hand split with a nominal thickness of 20-40 mm. It will also have hand cut edges. The sandstone should be laid with the widest side up (this will generally be the smoothest side). It is possible to lay the tiles with narrower side up, this will create a much more rustic effect with larger grout lines

The Sandstone is not generally recommended for use on driveways with heavy vehicles and/or power steering.

Travertine

The Travertine slabs are supplied calibrated to a 30 mm thickness

The Travertine can be laid similar to sandstone slabs as above. It is important that the Travertine is sealed to prevent excess water absorption and to prevent frost damage

Slate and Quartzite

The Slates and Quartzites are all calibrated to a nominal 27 or 30 mm thickness and are therefore suitable for use for patios and driveways.

Random Patterns

Please note for Sandstone and Travertine the random patterns may vary from those of slate. We endeavour to put more larger slabs in, as a proportion to make laying easier and reduce the number of Grout lines. Please advise if you need a particular pattern and we can quote you accordingly

Laying instructions

For patios with only light foot traffic, it is recommended to lay at least 75 mm of hardcore, for hard stoney ground. For areas with Sandy/Clay or peaty soils it is recommended to lay at least 200 mm of hardcore. The hardcore should be properly compacted with a whacker.

You can then fix the slabs with a wet mix of 4 parts sand and 1 part cement for light use patios. The slabs should be fully bedded with no voids under the slab. For patios with high foot traffic a mix of 3 parts sand to 1 part cement should be used. (Please note builders sand should be used not sharp sand) There must not be any voids under the slabs

Driveways

As above the ground must be prepared with a suitable well compacted depth of hardcore for your soil type. Then a concrete pad of at least 200 mm should be laid. The slabs should be laid using full bed of sand and cement or adhesive. There must not be any voids under the slabs. We do not recommend the sandstone for use with heavy vehicles and or vehicles with power steering.

Sealing

The Sandstone, Quartzite and Slate may be sealed with an impregnator to enhance colour and prevent staining, or left in its natural state. It will look different when wet and dry and also different at different times of day, any staining from wine or barbeques will darken the slabs but will dissapear over time with sunlight.

Please Note The Travertine must be sealed
